The kind of programme described here is typical of current good practice. At present most of the young people on extended placements are having difficulties with academic study. More practical forms of learning have been sought for them. It is hoped that growing numbers of high-achieving students will also be able to take part in extended work experience programmes. See tasks for Extended Work Experience in Download area. Year 9 – terms 3-6.Ben is keen to gain some experience in the construction industry. He is getting by in most academic subjects, but does not expect very good results in his end of Key Stage 3 tests. He has an outgoing personality and good spoken communication skills, but is frustrated by some aspects of the mainstream curriculum. Following discussions with his tutor, the school’s Vocational Coordinator and Ben’s parents, it is decided that he will take a combination of GCSE subjects with a vocational programme involving a link with the local further education college. Year 10Ben attends college one day a week, building up his skills and knowledge of practical aspects of construction and working towards a Level 1 qualification with the possibility of upgrading to Level 2 in Year 11. The school’s Vocational Coordinator visits him on college days to make sure that he is coping well in the new environment. Early in the year Ben starts to organise a block work experience with a relevant employer. He is advised and supported in this by a tutor at the college. The school’s work experience week is held in March, to avoid clashes with the majority of other schools which hold theirs in the summer. The school’s Vocational Coordinator has built up strong links with training representatives from several industries, including the Construction Task Force (CTF). During terms 5 and 6 the school and the CTF work with local employers to place students on an appropriate extended work experience in Year 11. Ben is interviewed by the manager of a local company, who agrees to take him on and to be his on-site mentor. The Vocational Coordinator carries out a Criminal Records Bureau check and ensures all the necessary health and safety checks have been carried out, and agrees to be Ben’s mentor at school. Year 11Ben goes to work at the construction company one day a week. The timetable for students on extended work experience is designed to fit around their regular day out of school, and some of the learning from the experience is certificated by a national diploma with guidance from their two mentors.
