What Next?

Now is the time to reconsider your future plans. Has your work experience changed your ideas? You can use the resources outlined in the ‘Your Ambitions’ section to check this out.

For those using Plan-it (the on-line system for managing your decision-making and progress through learning, life and work) look again at your Action Plan. Has your work experience made you think differently about your future?

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a great place to record all the skills you developed on work experience. We use CVs to summarise personal details, educational achievements, work experience and hobbies. People use them to show employers what they have done and what they can do.

If you are thinking of doing a particular job, you will need to check out:

  • What the job involves – the good and bad bits!
  • If there is work available locally or if you will have to consider moving away from home.
  • What skills you will need.
  • What qualifications you will need.
  • Where is the best place to gain the right qualifications - at school, at college, or on a work based training course.
  • How long it will take to train.
  • If you will have to consider going to university.
  • If there is any money available to support you while you train.

If you have no idea what you want to do – don’t worry! You can still keep your options open.

Just consider the following:

  • Improving your qualifications is always worth doing.
  • Staying in education or training will keep more options open.
  • More qualifications = better earning power in the future.
  • Having qualifications not only shows what you can do but it also shows that you are willing to learn.
