Work - A Sky High Experience!

Dan Bruton tells of his work experience with the pilots of 24 Squadron at RAF Lyneham

“I applied really early to ensure I got this placement. The RAF sent loads of questionnaires that had to be filled out truthfully. You really must emphasise why you deserve such a great placement. Luckily I got accepted!

My first day was exciting and nerve-racking. I had to sign the ‘Official Secrets Act’. It all seemed very serious. However, once the paperwork was over it was brilliant! The crew treated me like I’d worked with them for years. I never had to clean up or make the tea once.

On day two I had a go in the £12 million simulator. It costs £1,000 everytime you use it! I went in it twice for a total of 3.5 hours! I was taught the basics of flying. By the end I managed to make a perfect landing!

On day three I was given an in-depth tour of a Hercules. I was shown how everything worked and got to operate some of the cockpit instruments.

Despite the fact everyone was really busy because of the war in Iraq, I still managed to go on several flights. During these I was allowed to stand behind the pilot as he controlled the big Hercules. Before and after the flights I was allowed to carry out all the essential checks.

The crew was friendly and helpful. My experience further enhanced my dream of sitting in the pilot’s seat – and taking real control!

Loved it!

I really loved my time with 24 Squadron. They only take a few people every year for work experience so you have to be devoted, hardworking, punctual, sociable and inquisitive to get a place. I’m glad I put the effort in – it was worth it!”
