Rapping Up Work Experience

WEX 2004 – the Work Experience Conference, recently held at @ Bristol, provided a forum for debating the issues affecting those involved in organising work experience placements, local businesses that offer placements and the young people who take part.

Workshops and seminars covered topics such as WEX and GCSEs, the Internet and Enterprise and Bridging the Gap between WEX and Work Based Training.

Members of the WEX Youth ForumOne of the highlights was a presentation by members of the WEX Youth Forum. Four members had produced a rap record with GWR as part of their work experience. Rapper Joe Sparrow said, “We wanted to bring work experience to the attention of students and employers. We want them to understand that it’s really good.” Singer Clare Shepherd added, “Work experience is worth doing – it’s not a joke. Young people need to know what working is like. Employers need to offer more of this positive experience.

Connexions West of England’s Work Experience Manager Sam Budd summed up, “Participating in work experience provides an opportunity to learn new skills and improve employability prospects. It is an essential part of the learning process for young people. Quality work experience has many benefits for young people, local businesses and the economy. This conference has helped young people and local businesses learn more about getting the most from work experience and taking work experience forward in the future.”

The 2005 WEX Network Conference will take place on 9th March in Bristol. More details to follow.
