Clustered Placement Project

The key aims of this collaborative approach to the delivery of work experience was to enable employers to make a significant and effective contribution to young people’s experience of work without overdue strain on their resources. It also provided a sector-based, varied, high quality experience for young people.

Twenty-four young people were involved in the project and were nominated by Bedminster Down, Whitefield Fishponds, Hartcliffe, Monks Park, St.Bede’s, Hengrove and Speedwell.

The project, which took place in July, was based within the creative arts and media sectors and involved the following strands:

  • communication-focused
  • design-focused.

Full reports on both of these are contained in this newsletter:

  • communication – ‘Not what you say…’
  • design – ‘Behind the Fences’.

The anticipated benefits have proved correct.

For the young people:

  • A better understanding of the industry, and the ability to make better choices about qualifications and progression.
  • Experiences of work that have focus and challenge.
  • Effective support from host employers.
  • Learning experiences that develop employability skills.

For the employers:

  • Positive publicity and fulfilment of commitment to corporate social responsibility.
  • Customer feedback, leading to more effective marketing.
  • Developing opportunities for staff in managing/training young people.
  • Information about the needs, aptitudes and outlook of young people.
  • More effective recruitment from the emerging workforce.
  • The ability to host experiences of work without heavy additional workload.

For schools:

  • A more integrated and strategic approach to work related learning, growing from more effective business links of this kind.

Over 90% of the young people who participated evaluated the experience as ‘Successful’ or ‘Very successful’.
